Speeding ticket lawyers in Rockland County, NY

Rockland County is a suburb of New York City close to the Bronx, to the south of Orange County, and bordering the State of New Jersey to its west.

It is the southernmost county on the west side of the Hudson River and the smallest county in the state of New York outside NYC, comprising just five towns and 19 villages. However, it is one of the most densely populated areas outside NYC despite around one-third of the region being parkland.

The county also processes some of the largest volumes of traffic tickets in the state each year. Because traffic heading to New York from the northwest of the county or leaving the city in that direction must pass through Rockland, it sees a disproportionate amount of traffic for its size.

The New York State Thruway crosses the Hudson to Westchester at the Tappan Zee Bridge and then heads westwards, carrying a huge volume of traffic. As you would expect, it is amply policed by troopers and cameras.

The Palisades Interstate Parkway also connects Rockland to the George Washington Bridge to the south and the Garden State Parkway connects New Jersey to I-87/287. Frequent speed traps from the state, county, and local police account for a large proportion of the infractions.

In total, there are 20 busy traffic courts in the county. The towns of Clarkstown, Nyack, Ramapo, Spring Valley, and Orangetown especially see a high volume of infractions.

As well as speeding violations, cell phone and texting violations, seatbelt infractions, license violations, and other driving offenses are common.

Driving offenses at Rockland County Traffic Court are prosecuted by specially appointed city, town, and village prosecutors rather than the county’s District Attorney.

We routinely defend people accused of traffic violations in the county. We are familiar with the local traffic court system here and if we cannot get the case dismissed, we are often able to downgrade the offense and reduce the consequences for drivers.

How can our traffic ticket lawyers help?

Jonathan D. Katz has almost four decades of experience practicing law, much of it helping those charged with traffic violations and traffic-related crimes all around New York State.

He also has a strong background in defending clients accused of drunk driving in and out of the courtroom. Consequently, our team understands the local courts. We know the people and the procedures and this puts us in a strong position to fight your traffic ticket.

Most people struggle to navigate the complexities of the New York legal system and are not equipped to challenge the traffic ticket they have received. We take that burden off you and fight to get the violation dropped or reduced without you having to step foot in a courtroom.

For you, this can mean:

  • NO court appearance

  • NO points on your license

  • NO negative impact on your insurance

  • NO loss of a clean driving record

  • NO criminal record

Which traffic violation charges can we help you with?

Over the past few decades, Jonathan Katz Law has helped thousands of clients fight many types of traffic tickets and restore their driving records.

Typically, we can help you with the following types of violations:

Speeding violations in NY carry significant penalties, including heavy fines and traffic violation points ranging from 3 to 11 points, depending on how far over the speed limit you are accused of driving.

A driver who accumulates 11 or more motor vehicle violation “points” on their license within an 18-month period risks having their driving privileges suspended.

It may be possible for our experienced speeding ticket attorney to challenge the violation based on the equipment used, the weather conditions at the time, or an error in police procedure.

Points on your license for excessive speeding add up very quickly and can lead to an immediate suspension of your driver’s license.

If you are caught driving 21-30 mph over the speed limit, six points are added. Eight points are added for 31-40 mph over the limit and 11 points for 40 mph or more over the limit.

We may be able to challenge the ticket based on the equipment used, the weather conditions at the time, or an error in police procedure.

Cell phone tickets for distracted driving on highways have become increasingly common as we rely more on our phones. This type of violation is now more common than traditional distracted driving tickets for drinking, eating, reading or applying makeup while driving.

Sometimes, there is a good reason for having to use a cell phone while driving (e.g., an emergency) and at other times, law enforcement officers are incorrect in their assumptions, don’t have the evidence, or constitutional rights were breached.

If you are caught driving any motor vehicle – a car, truck, motorcycle or commercial vehicle – without a valid license in New York State, you are likely to face stiff financial penalties and even jail time. Depending on the circumstances, the offense may be prosecuted as a misdemeanor or felony.

Even if you have a valid license but fail to carry it on your person, you are breaking the law.

It is sometimes possible to fight these charges based on the actions of law enforcement at the time of the traffic stop. Alternatively, we may be able to reduce the charge so that the impact on your future is reduced.

If you drive a car, truck, motorcycle, bus, or another commercial vehicle in New York State, you must have a paid-up current insurance policy in place at all times.

If you are stopped by police and cannot show such insurance, you can face stiff financial penalties, driving penalties, and a criminal record.

It is important to defend yourself against this violation if there is a good reason why you had no insurance or mitigating factors are present. We help you do that.

A suspended or revoked license can be a harsh price to pay for a traffic violation.

Your driving privileges will be taken away and if you continue to drive – even once – and are caught by law enforcement, you could face a criminal charge with up to six months in jail.

We have experience in multiple strategies to ensure that drivers threatened with license suspension or revocation are back on the roads as soon as possible.

Commercial Drivers’ License tickets can have serious consequences for both the individual and the company concerned.

Many trucking companies take responsibility for drivers’ tickets and may want to challenge these. We can manage the entire process from start to finish, whether it is a speeding violation, equipment violation, logbook violation, overweight violation, unsecured load or any other CDL ticket.

Fighting traffic violations can be more challenging for repeat offenders – and the stakes are usually higher.

For repeated violations, significant fines, community service, license suspension or revocation, points on your license, and even jail time are possible. This is not to mention the insurance premium hikes that often result.

In this situation, you need an experienced traffic ticket lawyer who knows the local system to defend your rights and protect your driving privileges.
